Area of Interest

A homogeneous extent of the Earth bounded by one or more arc features (polygon) or represented as a set of polygons (region). 

Examples: states, counties, lakes, land-use areas, and census tracts.

It can be also defined as the size of a geographic feature measured in unit squares.
