Attribute Join
The attribute join is one of the basic operations in GIS and geospatial databases management involving combining the records of two tables based on a certain field, key, or unique identifier that they have in common. The attribute join differs from the spatial join, which is performed based on the location of the feature, in the fact that it creates relations based on the attributes rather than geographical location.
When it comes to the use of attribute joins in GIS, it is common practice to add some description or statistics to the features. For instance, when you have a population table, you may combine it with the geographic dataset by means of area code. Thereby, you will be able to display your demographic statistics in the form of a geographic map. The attribute join can be carried out with point, line, and polygon datasets in case they share the same attributes.
Attribute joins are applied in GIS for the purpose of creating maps and performing spatial analysis as well as in cartography and data visualization. GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro and QGIS can be used for performing this operation.
Attribute Join is a GIS data management tool which is used to join data stored in different tables by matching a specific attribute or key field. The attribute serves as a link between the two datasets enabling additional records or descriptions to be added to an existing GIS data set. Some of the commonly used join attributes include unique ID number, feature codes, feature names and others.
A GIS layer of counties can be joined with another table that holds demographic statistics of the same using a common county code. The join would allow the attributes to be used for GIS analysis, thematic mapping, querying, classification, and visualization. Attribute joins are important when the information you need is stored separately from the GIS data.
Unlike a spatial join, an attribute join does not involve the determination of relations depending on the feature location or geometry. Attribute joins are a vital component of geospatial data integration, database management, cartography and spatial analysis tools in applications such as ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.
