Ground Control Point
A Ground Control Point (GCP) is a precisely surveyed point with known geographic coordinates used to improve the positional accuracy of geospatial data. GCPs are widely used in drone mapping, aerial photogrammetry, remote sensing, land surveying, and GIS mapping to accurately align imagery with real-world coordinates. By identifying visible points on the ground and assigning accurate latitude, longitude, and elevation values, GCPs help reduce horizontal and vertical positioning errors. They are especially important for producing high-accuracy orthomosaics, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), Digital Surface Models (DSMs), topographic maps, and 3D models. GCPs can be surveyed using GNSS, RTK, or PPK equipment and are strategically distributed across a project area. Proper GCP placement and accurate surveying can significantly improve the reliability and geospatial accuracy of mapping and surveying results.

A Ground Control Point (GCP) is a fixed location on the Earth with accurately measured coordinates used to improve the geospatial accuracy of aerial and drone imagery. In GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and surveying, GCPs provide reliable reference points for aligning images with real-world geographic positions. Surveyed using GNSS, RTK, or PPK technology, GCPs help correct positional errors caused by camera geometry, GPS inaccuracies, terrain, and image processing. They are commonly used to improve the accuracy of orthomosaics, DEMs, DSMs, contour maps, 3D models, and topographic surveys. Strategically distributed GCPs can provide better horizontal and vertical accuracy across a mapping project, making them valuable for drone surveying, construction, agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and land development.
