Pixel Depth

The definition of Pixel Depth is the amount of bits used for the storage of the value of each single pixel in raster datasets. In case of GIS, remote sensing, and digital image processing, the pixel depth indicates the number of digital values that can be stored in the raster. So, for example, the raster with a 8-bit pixel depth can contain 256 values (0–255), whereas a 16-bit raster can store 65,536 values (0–65,535). The larger the pixel depth is, the more accurate the representation of variations in brightness, reflectance, elevation, temperature, or any other property will be. Thus, high-bit raster is useful in such cases as satellite imagery, aerial imagery, DEMs, and raster analysis in science. The pixel depth is different from the spatial resolution, which defines the size of the ground covered by each pixel.

Pixel depth refers to the amount of digital information assigned to each pixel in a raster image. It determines the number of possible values that can be recorded for features such as spectral reflectance, elevation, surface temperature, or image brightness. A raster with greater pixel depth can represent a wider range of values and capture more subtle differences within geographic data. For instance, an 8-bit raster supports 256 possible values, whereas a 16-bit raster supports 65,536 values. This capability is particularly important when processing satellite imagery, aerial imagery, digital elevation models (DEMs), and multispectral datasets. Pixel depth can influence image quality, analytical precision, and file size, so selecting an appropriate bit depth is an important part of geospatial data processing. It is separate from spatial resolution, which defines the ground area covered by each pixel. Understanding pixel depth helps GIS and remote sensing professionals evaluate raster datasets and choose suitable data for mapping, classification, visualization, and quantitative analysis.
