PolSAR

PolSAR (Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a modern remote sensing method that uses a number of radar polarization channels for investigating electromagnetic interactions with the Earth’s surface. The use of radar backscatter analysis under different polarizations allows recognizing and identifying surface scattering processes and physical parameters. PolSAR finds application in land cover classification, vegetation studies, forest monitoring, soil surveys, urban development, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. Unlike optical remote sensing methods, PolSAR provides the collection of data under clouds and in the nighttime mode, which is very useful for monitoring regions with permanent cloudiness. PolSAR data also enable the investigation of SAR image analysis, target detection, change detection, and geospatial mapping. The ability to collect information on surface structure makes PolSAR an important technology for modern GIS, Earth observation, and radar remote sensing.
