Radiometric Correction

Radiometric correction is an indispensable procedure in the field of remote sensing and image processing to enhance the precision and uniformity of satellite and airborne imagery. Radiometric correction minimizes variations in pixel values due to the influence of various radiometric factors like sensor properties, atmospheric effects, lighting variations, and so forth. Through the correction of such variations, radiometric correction ensures that the images' pixels better represent the true energy emitted or reflected by the Earth's surface. The technique is commonly applied in GIS studies, satellite image interpretation, environmental monitoring, land cover classification, agricultural studies, forestry, disaster management, and earth observation studies among many other areas. Radiometric correction plays an important role in improving the reliability of multispectral and hyperspectral imagery through creating more compatible datasets for comparisons across various temporal, sensorial, and acquisition factors.

Radiometric correction is one of the basic steps used in remote sensing as a pre-processing tool to enhance the quality of imagery from satellites, aerial platforms, and drones. It accounts for variations in pixel brightness due to sensor calibration, illumination from sun, atmosphere, viewing angles, and acquisition conditions. With radiometric corrections, images that have similar spectral properties are generated which are suitable for further geospatial analysis. Radiometric correction finds wide application in GIS, Earth observation, land cover mapping, agriculture, forestry, environmental monitoring, mineral exploration, and disaster assessment. It is especially important in the case of comparative analysis of images acquired using different sensors or at different dates. Correct radiometric correction ensures accurate analysis and classification of images such as vegetation monitoring, change detection, spectral analysis, and multispectral/hyperspectral image classification.
