Radiometric Resolution
Radiometric resolution refers to a remote sensing principle that entails the capability of a sensor to sense and record minute differences in electromagnetic energy. The radiometric resolution is responsible for determining the level of fineness through which a satellite, aerial or drone sensor can discern differences in brightness/energy intensity in the images. High radiometric resolution is instrumental for the purposes of detecting small differences in the reflectance of the earth surface, and it is very important in applications such as land cover classification, vegetation analysis, agricultural analysis, environmental monitoring, mineral exploration and change detection. Radiometric resolution is usually described using bits like 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit or 16-bit imagery. It is important to understand radiometric resolution together with other types of resolutions such as spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions.

Radiometric resolution refers to the sensitivity of a remote sensing sensor to variations in electromagnetic energy recorded from the Earth’s surface. It determines how many distinct intensity levels a sensor can capture and directly affects the ability to identify subtle differences in image brightness. Higher radiometric resolution provides a greater range of digital values, allowing satellite, aerial, and drone imagery to represent finer variations in reflectance and energy. It is commonly measured in bits, with higher bit depths such as 12-bit or 16-bit offering more intensity levels than lower-bit imagery. Radiometric resolution plays an important role in applications including satellite image analysis, vegetation monitoring, precision agriculture, land cover classification, environmental assessment, mineral exploration, and disaster mapping. Along with spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution, radiometric resolution is an important factor when evaluating remote sensing imagery for GIS and Earth observation projects.
