SAR

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is an active microwave remote sensing technique that allows obtaining images of the surface of the Earth regardless of the time of day and the weather. It is capable of penetrating through clouds and haze and works well during night times, which makes it extremely useful for constant Earth observation. SAR is applied in remote sensing, GIS, environmental monitoring, agriculture, disaster management, forestry, urban planning, and infrastructure studies. It can be used for detection of changes in land use, flood monitoring, ground displacement, and identification of surface objects and terrain analysis. Being based on radar measurement of electromagnetic waves interaction with the surface of the Earth, the Synthetic Aperture Radar is a powerful source of geospatial information when there are some limitations for the optical remote sensing method.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most powerful forms of remote sensing that utilizes microwave radiations to develop detailed images of the Earth's surface. Being an active sensing method, SAR emits microwaves and analyzes the reflection of those signals by various targets and landscapes. SAR satellites are capable of acquiring geospatial data despite any weather conditions including cloudy and hazy skies. SAR images are widely applied for Earth observation, land cover mapping, agriculture, forestry, flood monitoring, disaster management, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental studies. They can also serve for such applications as detecting surface deformations, assessing soil moisture, monitoring glaciers and coasts, and performing change detection. As radar detects characteristics of surfaces such as their structure, moisture, roughness, and geometry, SAR images allow observing features not visible on ordinary optical images. Due to its capability to produce reliable data continuously over large territories, Synthetic Aperture Radar has become an indispensable data source for modern GIS, satellite imaging, spatial analytics, and geospatial intelligence.
