Select by Location
The "Select by Location" is an important spatial query in the field of geographic information systems (GIS). The query is employed for the selection of geographic features through the use of geographic location. The "Select by Location" differs from other types of GIS queries since it utilizes geometry to determine how a feature relates to another dataset. The types of relationships include "intersects," "contains," "within," "overlaps," "touches," "crosses," and "is within a specified distance." Some of the examples include the selection of buildings within the flood zone, the roads that intersect a project boundary, and parcels within a particular administrative area. The "Select by Location" query is applied in many areas including GIS analysis, spatial data management, urban planning, environmental monitoring, transportation analysis, and suitability studies among others. This spatial selection tool enables GIS users to easily filter spatial data and conduct efficient analysis. It is usually found in popular GIS applications like ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.

The Select by Location process refers to a basic GIS analysis technique aimed at finding geographic features depending on their spatial relationship with other geographic features or layers. Unlike other techniques, when Select by Location is employed, the information is not sought within an attribute table; instead, spatial and geometric location of features are considered. Various spatial relationships may be involved in the process such as intersects, contains, contained within, overlaps, touches, crosses, or distance. Thus, one can apply Select by Location technique to find buildings located within a certain zone, rivers passing through a study area, roads near a certain development area, and others. Further analysis and mapping of those selected features can help to make decisions and solve various problems. Select by Location technique is especially useful for working with large vector datasets as it allows GIS professionals to easily select features based on geographic relationships.
