Union
The Union is an essential vector overlay GIS technique that integrates several polygon data layers into one dataset while retaining geometries and attributes of each original layer. The Union operation is a more complicated procedure than spatial join because it involves dividing overlapping and non-overlapping areas into several polygon features to facilitate spatial analysis of the relationship between datasets.
The Union operation is widely used in GIS, spatial analysis, cartography, land use mapping, environmental analysis, and urban planning. It allows combining land use boundaries with the boundaries of administrative regions to understand the distribution of particular land uses within these administrative units. Also, Union may be applied for comparing zoning areas, ecological zones, boundaries of properties, etc.
In the Union procedure, polygon boundaries of both input layers are retained, and the output dataset includes attributes of the participating layers. The Union operation can be performed in ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, and other GIS applications. Through integrating spatial boundaries and associated attributes, Union allows conducting overlay analysis and building geospatial datasets.

Union is a polygon overlay analysis method in GIS, which allows combining the spatial distribution and the attribute characteristics of two polygon layers into a single data set. The algorithm analyzes the spatial boundaries of two input layers and generates separate features for both overlapping areas and areas covered by one layer only. It enables the new layer to contain the full spatial extent of the input data along with the relevant attributes from both sources.
Union is applied in geospatial analysis, land use planning, environmental mapping, cadastral analysis, urban development, and natural resources management. For example, the GIS specialist can perform an overlay of soil maps on land use polygons to analyze the connection between the types of soils and land use classes. The method can be used to overlay the administrative boundaries with zoned, habitat, or infrastructure data.
As the result of the polygon union operation, the boundaries and the attributes of input polygons are preserved and it allows performing a detailed spatial analysis. Polygon Union is available in the GIS applications, like QGIS and ArcGIS Pro.
