Orthorectification

Orthorectification is a method of correcting geometric distortions in imagery due to terrain, camera angle, sensor location, and the curvature of Earth’s surface. This process results in accurately located imagery that can be easily incorporated into maps. The use of orthorectified images in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, drone mapping, surveys, cartography, agriculture, urban planning, construction of infrastructure, environmental monitoring, and spatial analysis is widespread. The use of elevation data such as Digital Elevation Model (DEM) together with precise information about sensors helps to increase positional accuracy of images and allows their proper integration with other geospatial datasets.

Orthorectification is a highly sophisticated technique in the field of image processing of geospatial images that is used to remove distortions in the images collected using aircraft, drones, and satellites due to variations in terrain elevation, orientation of the sensor, perspective of the camera, and curvature of the Earth’s surface. This is done by making use of ground control data, parameters of the sensors, and DEMs to create geometrically accurate images. Such orthorectified images can be accurately overlaid with maps, GIS layers, property lines, road maps, and any other kind of geographic data. Orthorectification finds wide applications in remote sensing, surveying with drones, photogrammetry, precision farming, infrastructure mapping, and environmental surveillance.
