Shapefile
A Shapefile is one of the most commonly used vector data formats within Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for managing, storing, and analyzing geographic features. Created by Esri, the Shapefile format allows storing of geometric data as well as attribute information about points, lines, and polygons. In contrast to a single-file format, a Shapefile comprises a number of files which include the .shp file containing feature geometry data, the .shx file serving for spatial indexing, and the .dbf file storing attribute information. The .prj file might be included to store the information on the coordinate reference system used. As Shapefiles are compatible with many GIS software products, the format is widely used for conducting spatial analysis, land-use planning, transport planning, surveying, environmental studies, and geospatial data exchange. While GeoPackage and GeoJSON formats offer additional possibilities in relation to Shapefiles, the latter is still widely used owing to its versatility and wide use in GIS.

A Shapefile is a widely recognized geospatial vector format used to organize geographic features and their associated information in GIS applications. It represents real-world objects as points, lines, or polygons, making it suitable for mapping features such as cities, roads, property boundaries, drainage networks, and administrative regions. Rather than storing everything in one file, a Shapefile uses several supporting files to manage geometry, attributes, spatial indexes, and coordinate system information. Its compatibility with popular GIS software makes it convenient for spatial data visualization, editing, analysis, and sharing. Shapefiles are commonly used in cartography, surveying, urban planning, environmental mapping, infrastructure management, and remote sensing workflows. Although newer formats can provide better support for complex data and modern GIS capabilities, Shapefile remains widely encountered when working with legacy datasets and exchanging vector data between different geospatial applications.
