Slope

Slope is a significant feature of terrain that is used in Geographic Information System (GIS). This feature indicates the steepness of terrain and represents how fast the elevation of the area is changing. The unit of measurement is typically degree or percentage and slope can be calculated using such sources as Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), or other elevation databases. Analysis of the slope is useful in finding out flat, gentle or steep slopes and it is helpful for terrain analysis, topographic mapping, land-use planning, agriculture, civil engineering, environmental studies, hydrology, and construction of infrastructures. With the help of GIS, the analysis of the slope helps to map the terrain steepness and to analyze its suitability, erosion, drainage, road and watershed analysis.

Slope is one of the basic terms that GIS and terrain analyses use to denote the angle and direction of an elevation change on the surface of the Earth. This term is commonly derived from DEMs and DTMs and presented in degrees and percent form.

Slope maps are useful to the GIS specialists in understanding different terrains, starting from absolutely plain areas up to very steep mountainous regions. Slope maps have a variety of uses in topography, land use planning, agriculture, construction, transportation, environmental research, and watershed management.

Slope information may prove valuable for remote sensing applications and geospatial analyses to model erosion, study drainage, analyze landslide susceptibility, plan roads, and perform many other activities in combination with elevation, aspect, and other spatial data.
